The cinema is famous for its legendary surround systems that take movie fans into the screen play in a way that seems so real and is so authentic. For those who want to create the ‘theatre’ experience as it is known, picking the right sound system is paramount. As most cinemas and movie theatre houses use a Dolby Digital Surround Sound System, it is the standard that is used by HDTVs as well. Although there is no such thing as high-definition sound per se, there are ways of enhancing and improving the sound quality that is heard when watching content on an HDTV.

Most HD broadcasting content is high-definition in picture resolution and CD quality sound or Dolby Digital Certified Surround Sound. This creates a sound quality that is like the original way that it was recorded. So what is so special about HDTV sound?

Well for starters the launch and release of digital broadcasting allows sound to be sent and transmitted in up to seven channels of sound. Given that most sound systems have used 5 channels of sound for years, the extra two channels add more effect and audio options. The seven channels further produce a whole ness approach similar to the effect that is effect and experienced in a 3D cinema. Dolby Digital Surround Sound is 5.1 but with HDTVs, some systems can support 5.2 (5 speakers and 2 subwoofers), 6.1, 6.2 and 7.1 sound systems.

At the most basic level, a considerable HD sound experience is a combination of an HDTV, a 5.1 sound system or receiver that supports Dolby Digital Surround Sound and a HD setup box such as a satellite/cable box.

So which one is the best?

- For the person on a tight budget, the 5.1 sound system is both affordable and is like all other sound systems in every way especially when it is Dolby Digital.

- For the individual who wants a more edged and base experience, a 5.2, 6.1 or 6.2 based sound system is the way to go.

- For the total HD sound experience, pairing Full HDTV, an HD set up box/media console with a the 7.1 Sound system will provide unparalleled entertainment.

Overall, the key to creating a total HD experience is more about the positioning of the speakers and even virtual sound bars can reproduce surround sound without additional speakers. The choice will boil down to your specific desires and your budget.
